Symposium “The Human Agent – Capabilities and Justice”
Paper presented by Hans Jonsson

06.02.2013

Hans Jonsson described that the transition towards retirement often leads to surprise, a slower rhythm and to a conflicting experience of freedom.

He said that engaging occupations are crucial for the time around this transition and retirement itself. Jonsson found that, besides social and financial stability as well as physical and psychological health, close emotional relationships, meaningful doing, and social contacts are essential for experiencing a good life in retirement. Hence Jonsson’s advice for health in old age is: „stay engaged, stay social, stay fit!“.
