Building Child-Friendly Institutions

Together with the University of Salzburg Center for Ethics and Poverty Research, we organized a 2-day symposium titled „Building Child-Friendly Institutions“. From December 17 to 18, 2025, we hosted 20 international experts in Salzburg to explore this topic.

Children are especially vulnerable persons and, given the asymmetry between individuals and institutions, this vulnerability increases in institutional settings. Child abuse and violence against children in religious communities, summer camps, sports associations, boarding schools, refugee campus etc. are sad reminders of the need to protect children in a special way.

Throughout the symposium, we addressed questions such as the following: What does it mean to build institutions that protect children and promote children’s flourishing? What does it mean to develop an institutional culture that is sensitive to the potential risks and entry points for abuse? How should institutional rules, mechanisms, and processes look like in order to do justice to the special situation and vulnerability status of children? What are best examples of „child-friendly institutions?“ How can a proper institutional ethics be developed that puts children at the center of attention? Gemeinsam mit dem Zentrum für Ethik und Armutsforschung der Universität Salzburg haben wir kurz vor Weihnachten ein zweitägiges Symposium mit dem Titel „Building Child-Friendly Institutions“ organisiert. Vom 17. bis 18. Dezember 2025 kamen 20 internationale Experten nach Salzburg, um dieses Thema zu erörtern.

Kinder sind besonders schutzbedürftig. In institutionellen Einrichtungen wie religiösen Gemeinschaften, Sommercamps, Sportvereinen, Internaten, Flüchtlingslagern etc. nimmt diese Schutzbedürftigkeit sogar noch zu, da es hier immer wieder zu Kindesmissbrauch und Gewalt kommt.

Während des Symposiums haben wir uns mit Fragen wie den folgenden beschäftigt: Was können und müssen Institutionen leisten, um Kinder zu schützen und ihre Entfaltung zu fördern? Was bedeutet es, eine institutionelle Kultur zu entwickeln, die sensibel für potenzielle Risiken ist? Wie sollten institutionelle Regeln, Mechanismen und Prozesse aussehen, um der Verletzlichkeit von Kindern gerecht zu werden? Was sind die besten Beispiele für „kinderfreundliche Institutionen“? Wie kann eine angemessene institutionelle Ethik entwickelt werden, die Kinder in den Mittelpunkt stellt?
